I read with interest, and to be honest, some anger, a recent opinion piece penned by longtime industry veteran, Mike McCarron. The article, entitled “The Private Fleet Creep”. https://www.trucknews.com/blogs/the-private-fleet-creep-how-to-turn-private-trucking-from-threat-to-opportunity/

I have a ton of respect for Mike; however, we do not always agree, and this is definitely one of those instances. Is there valid points and truths in the article, 100%. In the article it states Private Fleets have an advantage when it comes to drivers. There are many reasons for this, with the top of the list being the pay package. The majority of Private Fleets pay their drivers by the hour. According to our own benchmarking survey, 89% of Private Fleets surveyed also offer benefit programs that include dental, medical, driver wellness and others. Over 70% offer pension plans. The average driver’s work week is 54 hours, much lower than the 60 to 70 that is common in long haul segments. Although the work week is lower, the max pay rate average across all the fleets was over $108k, with drivers in their 1st year making over $70k. 74% of these drivers are home every night, with only 8% being out more than 1 night a week. The pay package as well as a work environment that also allows many drivers to have quality home time is a clear advantage many private fleets benefit from when it comes to being able to recruit and retain drivers.

<theblogid>87</theblogid>

PMTC/CBS Partners for Life Program

Join our team and help save lives!
Milton, ON: The Private Motor Truck Council of Canada has announced the full agenda & schedule for its 2026 Conference. “Each year those who attend the PMTC Annual Conference tell us it is one of the best educational and networking values they receive in the transportation industry. We believe this year’s line up of speakers continues to build on that reputation”, says PMTC President, Mike Millian. While staying in Niagara Falls, we are changing locations to the beautiful Fallsview Casino Resort. New this year is a full 2-day event, as opposed to being spread out over 3 days, being held on June 16th & 17th. Feedback from sponsors & attendee’s last year was in favour of moving to this format, & we wanted to ensure we followed through on our commitment to listen to feedback from our supporters! “ If interested in sponsoring or attending, don’t wait, as we sold out of exhibitor space last year”

The conference will kick off the morning of June 16th with the Annual General Meeting for the membership.
Recently I had the opportunity to speak to students from Glenview Park Secondary school in Cambridge, On. The Business & Education Partnership of Waterloo Region (BEPWR) put on a number of career days at schools in the region. They invited volunteers in to provide career talks to the students. In this case, myself and 2 other volunteers began the day speaking to a grad 9 class. We each took about 10 minutes discussing our own career path and then opened it up to the students to ask us questions. Next we split off and spoke to grade 10 students in smaller groups of 6 to 8 students for small group discussions to once again discuss our personal career journey. While this invitation to speak was not intended to promote an industry, when you tell your career story, which has been solely in the transportation industry since you were 18 years old, it ends up being a promotion of the industry simply by telling your story and the various paths it has taken.

<theblogid>84</theblogid>

PMTC Young Leaders Group hosts their Annual Christmas Meeting, raised funds for the Salvation Army

NEWS RELEASE
July 14, 2025
The Private Motor Truck Council of Canada (PMTC) and its members are calling for a nationwide change to key issues that negatively impact the transportation industry. These matters aren’t new; however, our latest invitation to address them is – and more pertinent than ever.
Transport Canada has invited us, along with other advocates and stakeholders, to connect with Deputy Ministers of Transportation across the country and discuss ways to reduce trade barriers within the trucking industry. In order to move freight from one jurisdiction to another, we need to remove regulatory barriers, address inconsistencies, and be unified with long-term, permanent solutions when it comes to MELT, ELDs, permits, allowances, and more.
In preparation for this meeting, the PMTC consulted with its Board of Directors and membership to create the following list of discussion points for consideration:

<theblogid>79</theblogid>

PMTC ANNOUNCES INCOMING BOARD OF DIRECTORS

For immediate release
