PMTC lends it's support for 2+1 Highway in Northern Ontario to improve Safety

The PMTC has lent it's support to the Federation of Northern Ontario Municipalities (FONOM) Toolbox approach to improve safety of Northern Ontario Highways by twinning, strategic 4 lane-widening and use of 2+1 highways in the region. At our October 9th Board of Directors meeting in Calgary, Ab, our board voted unanimously to lend our support to FONOM's proposal. Earlier today we sent the attached letter to the federal government as well as the Province of Ontario. Please feel free to reach back should you have any questions on our position.

Dear Prime Minister Carney, Premier Ford, and Minister MacKinnon,

On behalf of the Private Motor Truck Council of Canada (PMTC, a National not-for profit membership based association, representing the views of Canada's Private and Dedicated Trucking Fleets, I am writing to express our strong support for urgent safety and capacity upgrades to Highways 11 and 17.

These highways are lifelines of our members drivers, customers, and communities. Every day, thousands of transport trucks travel these routes to move essential goods — including food, fuel, equipment, and raw materials — between eastern and western Canada. Our members know firsthand the dangers and delays caused by limited passing opportunities, winter closures, and long single-lane stretches. The risks to safety, schedules, and supply chain reliability are significant.

We strongly endorse the proposal advanced by the Federation of Northern Ontario Municipalities (FONOM) calling for 2+1 roads and targeted twinning along key sections of Highways 11 and 17. This approach is practical, cost-effective, and proven to save lives while improving traffic flow and reducing collisions.

The Province of Ontario has already begun this important work, including the 2+1 pilot project between North Bay and Temagami. Federal participation is now essential to accelerate and extend these improvements along the full Trans-Canada corridor from Quebec to Manitoba.
Investing in these upgrades will:
  • Improve driver and public safety, reducing head-on collisions and weather-related accidents;
  • Enhance reliability for time-sensitive freight and just-in-time manufacturing; and
  • Strengthen national trade and logistics efficiency, benefiting every sector that relies on the movement of goods.
As an association whose members are committed to the safe and efficient movement of goods across Canada, we urge both levels of government to prioritize this nation-building project and commit the resources required to make it a reality.
