Intermodal Transportation Manager 

Job Description:

Are you ready to drive results for the best fleet in Eastern Ontario? Tiger Trucking is growing again and we’re looking for an experienced transportation manager to join one of Canada’s largest iconic retail brands as the Intermodal Transportation Manager! 

Reporting to the Senior Transportation Manager, the Intermodal Transportation Manager will be responsible for hands-on management of intermodal and drayage freight activities of the company in support of regional and network wide logistics operations. This will involve management of the asset based intermodal fleet as well as direct engagement with third party logistics partners, to ensure timely freight bookings and container supply is in place to support the needs of the business, troubleshoot issues that may be creating delays and identifying cost effective solutions to optimize transit times and equipment utilization within the network.

The successful candidate for the Intermodal Transportation Manager will bring the ability to think critically about existing operational processes and develop innovative solutions to drive continued performance improvements.

Intermodal Transportation Manager Job Responsibilities:

  • Organize, develop and execute the development of GTW’s Intermodal Transportation team
  • Create and lead your dream team. Provide daily leadership to team; manage team effectiveness while providing support for development and career goals
  • Monitor project progress and deadlines.
  • Oversee the day-to-day leadership of operations and strategic functions, engaging regularly with internal fleet, logistics providers and regional partners.
  • Proactively identify new opportunities and deliver innovative solutions to land new business
  • Prepare spot quotes for intermodal and inland drayage freight for new and existing business partners to meet monthly and quarterly goals. Must posses a deep understanding on market and lane pricing.
  • Manage execution of contracts with third party carriers. Ensure objectives are met by conducting regular audits.
  • Work with senior management to create annual budgets. Directly responsible to report weekly, monthly, quarterly and annually on financial performance and forecasts.
  • Drive and execute profit-improvement ideas, cost-reduction initiatives and operational efficiency solutions
  • Communicate organizational and functional strategy; translate into functional goals for team
Intermodal Transportation Manager Key Qualifications:

Post-secondary education in Transportation or Supply Chain Management (preferred), equivalent experience could be considered. 

  • Project Management experience
  • 5+ years of rail/intermodal transportation experience
  • 5+ years in a supervisory or management role in transportation
  • Demonstrated experience in managing a departmental budget
  • Strong communication and attention to detail

POSITION SUMMARY

The Fleet Manager is responsible for managing the endto-end fleet vehicle and material handling equipment lifecycle from procurement to disposal and ensuring compliance to the national Driver Safety and Compliance program. 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Direct supervision of fleet personnel.Develop and execute a strategic fleet vision for both vehicles and material handling equipment, including procurement, maintenance, and disposition processes.Design and maintain vehicle purchase specifications files for all Wolseley businesses.Develop and enforce fleet administration policies and best practices.Ensure unit compliance with all Federal, Provincial laws and regulations related to vehicle maintenance, licensing, safety, driver training, and policies.Develop and implement driver onboarding and training program.Review, monitor, and analyze Commercial Vehicle Operating Registration (CVOR)/NSC Rating and Driver Abstracts.Develop key performance indicators (KPI) for fleet maintenance and driver safety.Monitor and review accident/incident reports submitted by drivers and follow-up accordingly.

With overall responsibility for conducting and evaluating all fleet safety training, ensuring that our team members on board work and behave safely with the necessary skills.

WHAT YOU’LL BE DOING:
• Develops and implements detailed plans and recommends policies regarding program specific requirements.
• Advises leaders on the Highway Traffic Act, Occupational Health and Safety Act, everyday work practices and insurance risk violations, and departmental policies.
• Ensures development, maintenance, and use of documentation relative to safety procedures for safe vehicle and equipment operations.
• Conducts driver education courses to qualify drivers for: Province of Ontario/Quebec/BC classified licence upgrades; Operation of specialized equipment/vehicles; Remedial training when required.
• Conducts collision investigations in the field and submits reports and recommendations.

TRAINING
• Delivers classroom behavior modified based education, practical training programs and courses.
• Conducts behavior modification based training to reduce collisions and maximize road safety exposure.
• Continuously updates staff training plans, including development of skills and profiles for safe operation of vehicles/equipment. Identifies staff skill gaps, develops and evaluates related training plans.
• Ensures training and testing standards for practical and written examinations and certifications for vehicles and equipment meet regulatory standards across multiple provinces.
• Collaborates with people leaders to ensure staff complete required training related to the certified training curriculum.
• Maintain all documentation pertinent to training, reporting, and user follow-up
• Complete monthly reports highlighting individual and site strengths and opportunities for improvement related to fleet management

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR:

• 5+ years of transportation / logistics experience.
• A good understanding of fleet management best practices combined with hands on compliance training experience in a multi province operation.
• Excellent teaching, training, and mentoring skills.
• Strong digital literacy and an expert user of one or more major fleet management systems (GEO Tab, Carrier’s Edge, PMTC)
• Experience in and broad knowledge of the processes, procedures and equipment used in the operation and/or maintenance of fleet vehicles/equipment.
• Experience with evaluative testing and behaviour-based training of vehicle and equipment operators.
• Qualification as a "Train the Trainer" pertaining to Commercial Motor Vehicle Operations / Heavy Equipment would be beneficial.
• Thorough knowledge of Periodic Mandatory Commercial Vehicle Inspections (PMCVI), the Highway Traffic Act and Regulations and Commercial Vehicle Operations Registration (CVOR) programs and operations.
• A working knowledge of government legislation related to fleet operations including the Occupational Health & Safety Act, and the Ministry of Transportation and related regulations.
• Strong knowledge of collision reduction strategies.
• Experience using office systems including Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and Outlook.
• Ability to work as an effective member of a team and to effectively communicate both orally and in writing.
• Valid G Class driver’s license is mandatory with a minimum of 3 years driving experience
• A safe and clean driving record
• Must be flexible to work at various locations, as required.

Job Summary : 

Serves as primary Safety and Vehicle Maintenance resource within assigned district(Ontario). Develops and delivers safety and vehicle maintenance related information customized to the district. Drives decision making to promote and maintain the ‘Safety Above All' culture.

Essential Functions : 

         Creates and customizes safety and vehicle maintenance strategy, initiatives and programs within the local operating environment. Simplifies, automates, re-engineers, and improves existing safety and vehicle maintenance processes.

         Engages, educates, develops and trains on safety and vehicle maintenance acumen and leadership. Develops communication plans and training materials related to new safety processes. Facilitates training or education of new processes to customers as required.

·         Travels in response to events including but not limited to Station visits, accidents, injuries, equipment breakdowns and regulatory concerns. Performs root cause analysis, develops and performs after-action initiatives, and follow-up on events and activities.

·         Administers the policies relating to vehicle maintenance, safety management, audits, employee and manager training as well as controlled self-monitoring (CSM) processes as it relates to safety & vehicle maintenance including but not limited to BCSA/DCRT subject matter expert support, training and TRACS management.

·         Analyzes vehicle maintenance and safety, regulatory, and operational trends, and identifies root causes to influence positive change.

·         Oversees and ensures compliance of environmental, health, safety and vehicle maintenance programs with applicable regulatory requirements. Maintains a broad and thorough knowledge base across all regulatory areas, company policies, and IC/ISP agreements.

·         Monitor and process invoices related to preventative maintenance and repairs of company-owned equipment.

Required Skills, Abilities and / or Licensure : 

         A valid driver’s license.

         Professional designation in one or more of the following preferred: Associate Safety Professional (ASP), Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Director of Safety (CDS), Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP), or Certified Director of Maintenance/Equipment (CDM/E).

         Knowledge of concepts, practices, and industry trends related to industrial/occupational safety or vehicle maintenance. 

         Software skills, including use of Microsoft Office and web-based applications. 

         Verbal and written communication skills necessary to explain complex and/or confidential information.

         Time management and organizational skills necessary to manage multiple projects, appropriately prioritize workload, plan for resources to meet deadlines and goals, and respond to day-to-day functional needs.

         Ability to work with minimal supervision.

Minimum Education : 

Bachelor’s degree in Safety, Logistics/Transportation, Business Management or related field is required. In addition to minimum experience, high school diploma or GED and four (4) years’ experience is accepted in lieu of degree.

Responsibilities include:

Checks packing lists and other forms and loads vehicle with clinic equipment and supplies.

Transports staff, donors, volunteers, equipment, supplies, mail and promotional materials to and from blood donor clinics, Canadian Blood Services sites, hospitals, and other locations as required.

Loads and unloads equipment and supplies at mobile and permanent sites. 

Carries, sets up and dismantles equipment and supplies at mobile blood donor clinics.

Packs, receives, verifies and completes documentation related to specimens, blood/products and other supplies for transport.

Transports blood/products under appropriate temperature conditions in a timely manner to the appropriate area and ensures blood/products are within the appropriate temperature ranges.

Maintains vehicle for fuel, oil, water, and reports mechanical defects to the appropriate parties.

Completes daily circle checks, cleans vehicles, logs all mileage.

May be assigned to operations at blood donor clinics as deemed necessary by the assigned supervisor, with the exception of running beds; and may carry or assist in carrying frozen plasma for shipping.

Qualifications

Must possess a Secondary School diploma and a valid drivers’ license, minimum Class D
Must possess a clean Driver's Abstract.
Minimum 24 months verifiable professional driving experience in the last three years.
A minimum of four years of total driving experience is preferred. 
Must be capable of operating motor vehicles of various sizes and have the ability to be certified in defensive driving, transportation of dangerous goods, and first aid. 
At least one continuous year of professional experience driving large vehicles is required.
Experience working in a regulated environment is an asset. 
Strong communication skills in English, and a demonstrated use of good judgement is required. 
Must have excellent interpersonal & customer service skills & have the ability to work in a team setting. 
The physical ability to load, unload, & carry heavy clinic equipment & supplies up & down ramps is required. 
Must be available to work variable shifts – days, evenings, overnights, weekends, and some holidays.
