While traveling to Ottawa recently I had the opportunity to listen to a talk radio program geared towards the Canadian Transportation Industry called Trucker Radio News and Talk.  On this particular show, a driver phoned in to raise an issue that should concern all of us in the industry.

Attracting Youth to the Industry…time to stop talking about it and take action
April 2017
I joined this industry in 1990 at the age of 18, even then, I was an abnormality. Most of the drivers were nearing or above 40, and attracting youth to the industry was a challenge. What has changed in the last 27 years? The average age of a truck driver is now nearing 50, per a 2014 study by the Conference Board of Canada,

PMTC to reintroduce their Benchmarking Survey in 2017
January 2017
Benchmarking yourself against other like minded and similar business operations is a key way to see how you stack up against others. It allows you to validate your performance based on comparative peer data, identify areas of improvement and opportunity, and to highlight significant trends affecting your operations. There are many benchmarking products and services out there in the Transportation Industry, and many of them provide great information.

The Best of the Industry on Display in September
November 2016
September is one of my favourite months of the year. The weather is cool, clean and fresh, the leaves start to turn colours and provide us with amazing scenery. Baseball Playoffs are just around the corner, and the hockey season is just beginning, and for a few days, even Maple Leaf fans like me can be optimistic as news out of camps is always positive, and the reality of another losing season has not yet set in!!! Another reason September is one of the months I look forward to is there are some truly amazing events in the month that showcase the best our industry has to offer, and at the same time shows the charitable side of trucking and the Industry as a whole.

Attracting Youth to the Trucking Industry
September 2016
It is fair to say that attracting youth to the trucking industry has been a long standing problem. How do we make it sexy? How do we communicate what is good about the Trucking Industry…..or more importantly, dispel any misconceptions there might be? It is a challenge for everyone in the Industry, and it’s no different for Private fleets. Unfortunately, everyone can recognize it’s a challenge, however we all struggle with what the next steps are......

Driver Shortage, real or perceived?

The driver shortage is something that has been discussed in this industry for as long as I can remember.  When I joined the industry as a driver 26 years ago, this discussion was top of mind then. It was discussed in trucking industry publications, on Radio shows, at truck stops, by drivers on the CB, in short, in pretty much every circle of the Industry you could think of.  Current statistics indicate that the......

PMTC’s official Position on ELD’s (Electronic logging devices)
April 2015
